Famous Faces

Maurice Burton was born in LaScie, NL on the Baie Verte Peninsula. When he finished school he worked with CNT in LaScie and about one year later started working for Canada Post in Tilt Cove. He then was transferred to Grand Falls-Windsor where he worked there until 1974. Maurice then decided it was time to move back to the Baie Verte Peninsula and was promoted to Post Master in 1976 until he retired in 1996 after 36 years of service.

He was well known by most of the residents of the area and was very much involved in the community. He was a councillor for the Town of Baie Verte for two terms from 1977 to 1985 and from 2001 to 2005. He was on countless numbers of associations and committees (Tilt Cove Reunion Committee, Baie Verte Come Home Year, Progressive Conservative Association, a dedicated member of the AOTS United Church Men's Club). Maurice was very devoted to his family and his community.

Bob Carey was born in Windsor. Moved to Baie Verte in 1964. Bob joined the fire department at that time and was promoted to chief in 1967. He served as chief until 1988 making many changes in the fire service. Through Bob's dedication, we have one of the finest fire departments on the island.

Bill Eaton was the first appointed mayor of Baie Verte in 1958.

He was also elected from 1964-1968 as mayor. Mr. Eaton was a member of the Baie Verte Lions Club.

Bill Eaton played many rolls in the early years of building Baie Verte.

Clayton Green's first visit to Baie Verte was in 1945 at the age of 17. He came to Baie Verte to work in the woods cutting pulpwood. He worked with Bowaters at Southern Arm Pond - Camp #1 on Seal Cove Road.

Clayton operated an enclosed snowmobile for seven years transporting doctors and nurses to the surrounding communities during the winter. He also carried the drillers from Baie Verte to their drilling site by snowmobile.

Clayton, along with his wife, ran a very successful business in Baie Verte (Clayton Green & Sons) for many years.

Cyril Jones was born in 1904 at Little Bay Islands. He married Muriel Mills of Burlington and moved to Baie Verte in 1939 where they had four (4) sons, Kenneth, Elmo, Melvin and Roy.

Cyril came to Baie Verte to work with Bowaters as a Maintenance person until Bowaters closed their Baie Verte Operations. He then worked with the Town of Baie Verte until his retirement.

In the early days, Cyril owned and operated a small grocery store, theatre and taxi service.

Elizabeth Quick was born in St. John's in 1927. She graduated from Mercy Convent High School and Business School at the Convent. She worked in the Registrar's Office at Memorial University and she also worked with orthopedic surgeons for a period of eight years. Betty came to Baie Verte in December 1963.

James Quick was born in St. John's in 1927. He graduated from Bishop Field College and the Newfoundland School of Pharmacy. James practiced pharmacy in St. John's, Stephenville and Corner Brook before moving to Baie Verte and setting up his own pharmacy in 1963. He was awarded the prestigious Bowl of Hygiene for outstanding service to the community through pharmacy, the J. Frank James Meritorious Service Award and the E.C. MacDonald Memorial Medal. He was an Honorary Member of the NF Pharmaceutical Association and an Honorary Member of the Fire Department. James Quick was greatly involved in the community.

William Parsons first came to Baie Verte in 1964 to work with S. Thistle Limited as foreman on construction of the RCMP Building and houses on Lower Barn Hill.

While in Baie Verte, he applied for a position with the town as town foreman. His application was accepted and he became the town foreman in 1965. During this time, he moved his family to live in Baie Verte and purchased a residence.

During his time as town foreman, he was responsible for all town maintenance and under his supervision the Baie Verte Swimming Pool was constructed. He remained in his position until the time of his disability when he was forced to retire. He remained in Baie Verte, his adopted home, until the time of his death in 1995. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 54 in Baie Verte.

Marie Sullivan was born in Coachman's Cove. She taught elementary school in Baie Verte and surrounding communities for seven years before marrying Bill Sullivan of Brent's Cove.

They had eleven children. Marie lived in Baie Verte since 1951 where she owned and operated a grocery store for a number of years. She retired in 1986.

Roy Thistle was born in King's Point, Green Bay. He finished high school at the United Church School, King's Point. Roy also received a Grade 3 Teaching Certificate and taught school at Bulley's Cove, King's Point for 7 months.

He moved to Burlington with the family and worked for a while in the family business. Roy worked with Bowater's Newfoundland as an accountant. After Bowater's, he worked in the family business and managed a sawmill, planning mill and general store in Burlington.

In 1967, he started his own hardware business in Baie Verte (now White Bay Home Hardware) and was involved in the selling of hardware and building materials. This business is now over 30 years old.

Mr. Whalen came to Baie Verte on January 6, 1961. He was an agent with Imperial Oil Limited. Mr. Whalen started the Fire Department in 1962 with seven firemen. Gid was the first fire chief. He helped with the purchase of an old pumper truck from Corner Brook West Fire Department. Mr. Whalen retired on August 31, 1989.
